Qatar and the Middle East face serious water scarcities and therefore are dependent on substantial food imports for thier basic Food Security. Faced with this pressing reality, Qatar has established a country-led national Food Security programme to increase domestic production which will lead to scientific and technological development in the four following areas:
- Renewable Energy with a special focus on solar energy and the establishment of a solar park
- Water management and desalination technologies
- Agricultural development, including the adoption of technologies such as Hydroponics and water-efficient techniques such as drip irrigation
- Food Processing through the establishment of an Agro-Industrial Park
Water scarcity and food shortages are likely to increase around the world with climate change, population growth, and rapid economic expansion of some regions. Therefore we must perceive future risks and invest now if we are to successfully cope with these threats to our collective Food Security.
